Doubleblind® Privacy: Rethinking traditional models.
Traditional geo-IP databases use a lookup and disclosure model – lookup an IP address and disclose the estimated location. This model may work at the country or state level, but breaks down at the zip+4 and postal code level – often as granular as the side of a street, floor in a building and, sometimes, even a single home.
We didn’t like the privacy implications of a zip+4 lookup and disclosure database, so we looked to rethink the geo-targeting model and build-in privacy as the default. We started from these simple guidelines: No collection, no tracking, no storage and no disclosure.
1. No Collection.
As network operators, ISPs are in the unique position of already knowing the location of every IP address on their network – they are the true and accurate data source. By partnering with the ISPs, we avoid the need for any additional data collection.
2. No Tracking.
Geographical targeting was around long before the Internet and it has the benefit of being completely independent of any online browsing behavior. By focusing only on real world geography, we avoid the need to track a subscriber’s online activity or the need for any packet inspection technology.
3. No Storage.
The Internet already uses IP addresses to route packets to and from their destination. Like Internet routers, our technology only works with current IP addresses and avoids the need to know or store any historical information.
4. No Disclosure.
With our doubleblind® privacy architecture, we removed the need to disclose the location of a user and replaced it with a match – no match response. By altering the lookup and disclosure process we keep the users location where it’s always been – safely behind the ISPs firewall.
